EU Threatens Sanctions on Parties in Sudan Conflict

Sources reported that ambassadors from the European Union have agreed on a framework for sanctions targeting the main parties in the Sudan war, which includes freezing assets and travel bans. The proposal for sanctions was sent in July, but it was not approved by the ambassadors until Monday. EU foreign ministers must still give their final approval this month before the EU can start adding individuals and entities to the list. A draft resolution on Friday indicated that the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Germany plan to submit a request to the United Nations Human Rights Council to conduct an investigation into alleged atrocities committed in Sudan, which involved killings based on ethnicity.
