The mayor of Zouk Mikayel, Elias Baena, revealed that "we have over 200 cases of skin cancer." He stated, "We believe that these cases are resulting from the Zouk factory," emphasizing that "the area from Dora to Bikfaya is being harmed by the factory, and there was a previous decision to demolish it." He continued, "They tell us that we are compelled to operate the Zouk factory despite the damages it causes... the filters are not working now and toxins are spreading without oversight, and the Ministry of Energy is responsible for the company." For her part, MP and environmental expert Najat Saliba pointed out that the Grade B fuel oil at the Zouk factory requires electricity to burn, but insufficient electricity leads to black smoke, which consists of harmful toxins that affect the respiratory system.
