The U.S. Congress announced today, Thursday, that it will close its doors for nearly two weeks without approving emergency aid for Israel and Ukraine, amid heated discussions among lawmakers about immigration policy and facing opposition from several Republicans regarding ongoing support for Kyiv in its war against Russia. The Senate postponed its session long past midnight local time after passing a temporary spending bill to avoid the risk of a partial government shutdown. Advocates for foreign military support had hoped that this temporary spending bill would include such support. President Joe Biden requested Congress to approve the funding last month. The removal of foreign military support from the spending bill has raised concerns that funding for Kyiv may never be allocated, especially after the Republican-led House passed a bill this month that includes aid for Israel only, leaving Ukraine out. Democratic leaders in the Senate rejected this bill.
