Erdogan to Meet Putin to Discuss Grain Export Issues

Two Turkish sources revealed to "Reuters" today, Thursday, that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian resort of Sochi on September 4th to discuss grain exports across the Black Sea. One of the sources added that the leaders will also discuss the implications of the war in Ukraine, in addition to an agreement that allows for the safe export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea.

The Kremlin stated on Thursday that there are no specific results yet regarding a proposal from Moscow to ship Russian grain through Turkey to impoverished countries with financial support from Qatar. Russia mentioned on Wednesday that it had proposed the plan as an alternative to the previously reached agreement facilitated by Turkey to ship grain across the Black Sea, from which Moscow withdrew in July.

The Black Sea grain agreement, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in 2022, ended in July after Russia withdrew from it. Since then, Ankara has been trying to persuade Moscow to return to the agreement.
