The Director General of the COP28 climate change conference office, hosted by the UAE in November, revealed that the Gulf state will not host the conference again next year. The next climate summit, COP29, is scheduled to be held next year in Eastern Europe, but Russia's refusal to hold the event in an EU country has prevented the selection of a host nation. This has led media reports to suggest that the UAE might intervene to host it again after COP28 in Dubai next month.
Majed Al Suwaidi, the Director General of the COP28 office, told reporters on Friday that the UAE has not been requested to host COP29 and has no intention of doing so. If no agreement is reached on a host country for COP29, it may once again be held in Bonn, Germany, where the headquarters of the UN climate secretariat is located.
