President of the Spanish Football Federation Resigns

Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, announced in a statement today, Sunday, that he will resign from his position following the scandal that arose from a kiss on the lips of the player against her will during the celebration of the Women's World Cup victory. Rubiales said in his statement: "After FIFA's swift suspension alongside other disciplinary actions taken against me, it is clear that I will not be able to return to my position."

He added, "Persisting in waiting and clinging to the position will not bring anything positive, neither for the federation nor for Spanish football. Among other things, there are real powers that will prevent my return." Rubiales also stated that he has resigned from his position as vice president of UEFA.

He emphasized that the kiss was consensual, but the incident sparked outrage among the players within Spanish society. Rubiales seemed to stick to his account, stating: "I believe in the truth, and I will do everything I can to reveal it." The Spanish public prosecutor filed a complaint on Friday with the Supreme Court against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion due to kissing player Jenni Hermoso.
