Firefighting teams in Greece have been working tirelessly to extinguish wildfires that have been burning for the tenth consecutive day on the island of Rhodes, while new fires have erupted on the mainland, destroying farms and factories last night, prompting farmers to rush to save their livestock. Officials have ordered the evacuation of several areas in the disaster-stricken coastal region of Magnesia, located north of the capital Athens. The ongoing wildfires across the country, fueled by strong winds and temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, have resulted in the deaths of two more people in central Greece yesterday, raising the total number of fatalities due to the fires to five. Wildfires and floods have also impacted Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Algeria, and other countries. EPSU stands in solidarity with firefighters and emergency workers on the frontline, and appreciates the solidarity of firefighters across Europe in assisting their comrades.
