Griffith: No End in Sight for the Conflict in Sudan and Civilian Casualties in Darfur

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffith announced today, Wednesday, that there is no end in sight to the conflict in Sudan, which has been ongoing for more than seven months. Griffith described the civilian casualties in Darfur as "horrifying" and noted that Khartoum still lacks access to humanitarian aid. He added, "The fighting must end. All parties must respect their commitments made during the Jeddah talks." The city of El Geneina in East Darfur witnessed fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces last Monday after days of tensions between the two sides. The Rapid Support Forces announced yesterday, Tuesday, that they had taken control of the El Geneina 20th Infantry Division of the army.
