PSV Eindhoven, a competitor in the Dutch first division, announced on Monday the death of its player Kees Rijvers, the former coach of the Netherlands national team, at the age of 97. The midfielder played 33 international matches and scored 10 goals for the Netherlands from 1946 to 1960. He also won the French first division title with Saint-Étienne in 1957. During his time as the coach of the Dutch national team from 1981 to 1984, he gave the first international appearances to players like Frank Rijkaard, Marco van Basten, and Ruud Gullit. While coaching Eindhoven, he won three Dutch league titles as well as the KNVB Cup twice and the UEFA Cup in 1978. The club stated: "With the death of Kees Rijvers, the club and Dutch football have lost a great icon."
