Are the Supporters of Maouad's Candidacy Disbanding?

Are the Supporters of Maouad's Candidacy Disbanding?

The presidential election has been postponed until next year, without any positive indicators, despite discussions about external initiatives that may stir stagnant waters. However, while waiting for these initiatives to bear fruit, attention remains on the unstable security situation, from the south to all regions, under the pressure of financial and economic strain, along with political tensions and their repercussions on the streets.

Informed political sources have expressed their fear of security incidents that could escalate to assassinations if the ongoing political impasse, coupled with an economic collapse, continues without any prospects. They indicated that the political horizon, despite some indicators of international movement toward Lebanon, remains closed.

Through "Akhbar Al-Youm" agency, they noted that the opposition (comprising sovereigntist forces and independents) is working to prevent the disbandment of the coalition supporting MP Michel Maouad’s candidacy. They stated: the 45 votes represent power that should not be underestimated in the face of the white paper and the obstruction imposed by Hezbollah and its allies.

While considering that this coalition is not completely cohesive, it is still better than having nothing. They emphasized that the Progressive Socialist Party and the Lebanese Forces are its main pillars, where coordination is ongoing.

Regarding their openness to any other option that could facilitate the election process, the sources mentioned that the condition for such openness is that the candidate must be sovereigntist and not from the March 8 alliance. They said that even if there is a shift from one candidate to another—who is not Maouad—there will be complete coordination between former MP Walid Jumblatt and Dr. Samir Geagea, noting that their alliance exists and must be solidified, especially in facing upcoming challenges.

As for dialogue, the sources clarified that it could be bilateral, underscoring that the communication between Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Jumblatt has never ceased. They concluded that with the alliance of the Lebanese Forces and the opposition, Jumblatt would be able to negotiate with Berri based on the support of 40 or more deputies.
