Britain announced a new package of sanctions against Russia today, Thursday, stating that it aims to reduce President Vladimir Putin's arsenal and the funds needed for the war two years after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in a statement, "Our international economic pressure means that Russia cannot afford the cost of this illegal invasion. Our sanctions deprive Putin of the resources he desperately needs to fund his faltering war."
Britain has imposed sanctions on companies linked to the Russian ammunition industry, including the largest state-owned enterprise, Sverdlov, targeting revenue sources in the metals, diamond, and energy industries. The Foreign Office stated that "those subject to sanctions are major Russian importers and manufacturers of machinery used in the production of defense systems and components such as missiles, engines, tanks, and fighter jets."
The package includes over 50 individuals and entities and was revealed by Britain just days before the anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion, representing the latest step in a coordinated Western effort to restrict the Russian economy.
