Decline in China's Population for the First Time in 60 Years

Data from the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics has shown that China's population decreased to 1.411 billion in 2022, which is 850,000 less than the end of 2021. Local media indicates that this is the first time in 60 years that the country has experienced a population decline. The statistics bureau reported, "By the end of 2022, the population of China reached 1 billion 411 million and 750 thousand (excluding the populations of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as foreigners), which is 850,000 less compared to the end of 2021."

The report noted that the birth rate last year was 9.56 million, resulting in a birth rate of 6.77 per thousand people. In the same year, 10.41 million citizens died, leading to a death rate of 7.37 per thousand people.

The report also indicated that by the end of 2022, the gender ratio was 104.69, approximately 105 men for every 100 women. The male population stood at 722.06 million, while the female population reached 689.69 million.

The working-age population (ages 16 to 59) at the end of 2022 was 875.56 million, accounting for 62 percent of the total population. Furthermore, the number of citizens aged 60 and above reached 280.04 million, representing 19.8 percent of the total population.

In terms of residency, 920.71 million people live in urban areas in China, making up 65.22 percent of the total population, while 491.04 million people reside in rural areas.
