The Dutch Federation reported today, Wednesday, that former international player Marc Overmars has been banned from holding any position in professional football for at least one year due to inappropriate conduct towards women at Ajax. The federation confirmed reports from the Dutch newspaper (NRC) citing FIFA's approval of the suspension imposed on Overmars in the Netherlands late last year.
Overmars resigned from his position at Ajax in February 2022, admitting to “unacceptable” behavior after the club revealed that he had sent inappropriate messages and images to several women working at Ajax.
Last year, an independent sports court banned Overmars from taking any position in Dutch football for two years due to his behavior, with a one-year suspension of that ban. Following this, the Dutch Football Association requested FIFA to apply the ban globally.
Overmars currently serves as the sporting director at Royal Antwerp FC in Belgium, where he moved after his abrupt departure from Ajax. A spokesperson for Overmars stated that the former player for the Netherlands, Arsenal, and Barcelona has received notification of the suspension but is not ready to comment yet.
