Iraq and UAE Strengthen Cooperation to Combat Corruption

The Iraqi Integrity Commission emphasized on Tuesday the necessity of joint efforts among countries to combat corruption. It praised the cooperation of the United Arab Emirates in the extradition of offenders and extended an invitation to the UAE Minister of Justice to visit Iraq.

A statement from the commission noted that "Chairman of the Integrity Commission, Haidar Hanoun, met with UAE Minister of Justice Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi." Hanoun asserted the "importance of consolidating the efforts of all nations in the fight against corruption, the prosecution of its perpetrators, and the recovery of proceeds derived from it," stressing that "the success of international cooperation in this area undermines the foundations of corruption and restricts corrupt individuals to narrow corners."

He commended "the cooperation of the United Arab Emirates with the Republic of Iraq in fighting corruption, recovering illicit funds, and extraditing convicts," urging "other countries to follow suit and to begin preventing safe havens for corrupt individuals and assets representing proceeds of corruption."

Hanoun pointed out that "the Federal Integrity Commission and the Audit Bureau in the UAE have concluded a memorandum of understanding aimed at reinforcing and enhancing cooperation, and improving systems and policies to prevent and combat corruption between the two parties," describing "the strengthening of relations among Arab brotherly countries as crucial for the development and prosperity of these nations, and for addressing the surrounding threats they face."

He extended "an invitation to the UAE Minister of Justice to visit Iraq." For his part, the UAE Minister of Justice indicated that "his country considers the extradition requests submitted by the Iraqi side with high interest and continuous follow-up, and initiates the extradition procedures as soon as they are received, handling them professionally, without complexity or procrastination," adding that "the UAE strongly supports the Iraqi government for the benefit of Iraq and its brotherly people." He confirmed his commitment to accept the invitation to visit Iraq soon.
