The Fate of the School Year... After 15 Days

The Secretary General of Catholic Schools, Father Yusuf Nasr, stated that the decision made by the Episcopal Committee for Catholic Schools is not based on the 8 percent deduction from teachers' salaries, but rather because the deduction will also include the social assistance given to teachers in dollars. Father Nasr condemned the state's decision to cut social assistance in favor of the compensation fund instead of meeting the schools halfway and supporting them. He emphasized that no one can guarantee that the deduction will remain at 8 percent, as it could reach 30 percent or more.

Father Nasr questioned who will bear this cost, asking, "Can parents handle increases in tuition fees?" He pointed out that everyone should understand there is a law that prohibits the compensation fund from receiving payments in dollars and from providing retirement or compensation in foreign currencies.

He also observed that the lack of publication of the law in the official gazette so far is a positive step that we appreciate, as it represents an understanding of the position of Catholic schools and is a first step towards finding solutions. He added, "We need a comprehensive legislative package based on the required needs," emphasizing that "schools will decide the fate of the school year after 15 days based on the development of affairs."
