Sudan: Urgent Calls for Intervention to Prevent Deterioration of Food Crisis

A joint report by the United Nations Development Programme and the International Food Policy Research Institute has revealed that the widespread food insecurity in Sudan requires urgent and extensive interventions to enhance food aid, reactivate agricultural systems, and restore supply chains to alleviate the food crisis and prevent its escalation. The report calls for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, unrestricted access for aid, and an increase in interventions in nutrition, health, water, and sanitation. It highlights the accelerating food crisis in Sudan, noting that 59% of rural households are suffering from food insecurity, with the highest rates observed in the states of West and South Kordofan and Blue Nile. The joint report warns of a potential famine in Sudan this year, especially in the states of Khartoum and Al-Jazira, as well as in the regions of Kordofan and Darfur.
