Deputy Firas Hamdan warned that raising the customs dollar could lead to dire social consequences and may encourage smuggling, indicating that this is an illegal process. In an interview with "LBC," he said, "The Minister of Finance cannot impose a tax by his decision; we are in confrontation with ministries that target the Lebanese citizen’s daily rights."
He added, "The Minister of Finance personally turns into a super minister by increasing the customs dollar, while he only has the right to raise it through a law, and violating this incurs responsibility." In this regard, he called on his fellow deputies, lawyers, and legal experts to confront this unjust decision against the Lebanese people, and he is waiting for a response from the Minister of Finance.
He noted that "there is an ease in violating the law and the constitution, which reflects the country's trajectory from the port explosion to electing a president, to the budget issue, to the accounts cut." He continued, "I will use all legal means against the Minister of Finance to stop him from abusing the law."
He indicated that "any dialogue should take place within the Chamber of Deputies and during sessions designated for electing the President of the Republic." In response to a question about whether there has been any presidential settlement regarding any of the proposed names today, he affirmed, "We will be outside any settlement." He added, "It has been 45 days since Melhem Khalaf and Najat Aoun have been in the Parliament; deputies should come down to the council and engage in dialogue within the sessions for electing a president."
