Italian coast guards announced the discovery of the bodies of nine migrants, including a child, who died in a boat capsized after rescuing 22 of its passengers, while search operations continue for others. The boat sank in Maltese waters due to bad weather and waves reaching two and a half meters high, approximately 30 nautical miles (55 kilometers) southeast of the Italian island of Lampedusa. Italian coast guards, who were called for help by Maltese authorities, managed to locate the boat despite challenging conditions and "rescued 22 people and recovered the bodies of nine others, including a child," according to a coast guard statement. The rescued migrants were "suffering from severe hypothermia" and were transported to Lampedusa. Search operations for the site of the boat capsizing continue, although the number of missing persons has not been specified.
