Jeddah Corniche Circuit: Pioneering Steps Towards Sustainability

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which will host the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix stc Formula 1 race, is a prime example of providing effective solutions to environmental challenges and achieving sustainability. The circuit has taken into account all environmental challenges and worked towards addressing them to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the local environment. The design of the circuit minimizes the need for high irrigation levels, which plays a significant role in delaying air pollution rates and lowering temperatures in the area. Additionally, solar energy has been employed to supply electricity to the circuit through 86 solar panels, contributing to 82.7% of total consumption, along with the use of dimmable LED lights during times when high precision is not required, eliminating the need for high-intensity discharge technology, which positively impacted the reduction of generator demand by 19%. Moreover, the marshals' cabins now operate on solar power.

The Ministry of Sports continues its ongoing efforts to improve vegetation cover, particularly following initiatives such as tree planting and agriculture, which have been implemented across all its facilities, including the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, where over 43,000 square meters have been planted with more than 2,000 adaptive trees. The ministry has become part of environmental innovation plans and sustainability efforts, supporting these visions by hosting sports events aimed at preserving the environment, such as the Formula E electric car races and the Extreme E electric SUV races. This underscores the ministry's commitment to aligning sports practices with environmental goals, as evidenced by the Jeddah Corniche Circuit's reduction of diesel consumption by 1,000 liters through a 30% decrease in energy demand.
