UAE Considers Imposing Export Controls on Sanctioned Goods

Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing informed sources, that the UAE is considering the introduction of export licenses for a list of items, including chips and other components that are subject to sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, which are used by the Russian military in Ukraine. The report states that implementing these controls could deny licenses for dual-use goods used on the battlefield, potentially harming the Kremlin's ability to "sustain its war machinery."

Bloomberg noted that "Dubai remains a key shipping hub for components that support Moscow's war effort," raising concerns expressed by sanction officials from the United States, Britain, and the European Union who visited the UAE this month.

An Emirati official disclosed in a statement sent via email to Reuters that the Gulf state has a legal framework for export control and continuously monitors the export of dual-use products. He added that the UAE also remains in close contact with its international partners, including the United States and the European Union, regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

The official affirmed that "the UAE is committed to strictly adhering to United Nations sanctions and has clear processes for dealing with sanctioned entities, which we have implemented against a number of companies since the beginning of the conflict and will continue to take these responsibilities seriously."
