The Jeddah Fountain is one of the tourist landmarks in the Kingdom, particularly along the Red Sea coast, providing a horizontal visual delight that can be seen from all parts of the city of Jeddah. This has made it a point of attraction for residents and visitors, especially pilgrims and Umrah performers. With the month of May marking its 40th anniversary, the fountain's story dates back to 1980, with its current form being operational since 1985. The amount of water propelled into the air exceeds 18 tons and its height reaches 312 meters, while its base is designed in the shape of a traditional incense burner.
The Jeddah Fountain is the first giant fountain to be installed in saltwater, and its equipment was manufactured with advanced anti-corrosion technology to withstand the saline water used in its pumping process. Filters have been installed to purify seawater from impurities before it reaches the pumps, which are designed with the power of a jet engine, propelling water at a speed of 233 miles per hour. The fountain is illuminated by 500 high-intensity lights designed to withstand the continuous fall of thousands of tons of water. The fountain only completely stops operation during annual maintenance or in rare instances when winds blow in the opposite direction.
