U.S. President Joe Biden praised American diplomacy that helped secure the release of 24 individuals held by Hamas fighters, stating that "this is the beginning of what is expected to be the release of more captives by the group in the coming days." In a press conference, Biden said, "Starting this morning, under an agreement reached through intense American diplomacy, including numerous communications I made from the Oval Office with regional leaders, the fighting in Gaza will cease for four days."
Biden declined to speculate on the duration of the war between Israel and Hamas but mentioned he believes that the chances of extending the current ceasefire "are real." He expressed hope for the release of Americans held by Hamas. Biden stated, "I don't know how long it will take." He added, "My expectation and hope is that as we move forward, the rest of the Arab world and the region will also apply pressure on all parties... to put an end to this matter as soon as possible."
