Countries, during UN-led talks on Friday, agreed on a provisional goal for 2030 to reduce emissions from international civil aviation through the use of sustainable aviation fuel. However, China, Russia, and some other countries expressed concerns about the impact on their economies. Although details of the agreement have not yet been publicly released, a senior delegate stated that it calls for a 5% reduction in emissions through the use of sustainable aviation fuel or other clean energy sources, compared to a previous draft that aimed for a reduction of between 5% and 8%. This agreement, being monitored through an online broadcast, follows five days of discussions hosted by the International Civil Aviation Organization in Dubai, just days before the more comprehensive COP28 summit on climate change.
