The election process for the Engineers' Syndicate in the north began at 9 AM today, Sunday, to choose a new chairman to replace the current chairman, Bahaa Harb, as well as council members and the solidarity fund. According to syndicate tradition, the chairman this year must be from the Islamic community.
A total of 9,453 engineers, out of 16,000 who have paid their dues, are eligible to vote in these elections taking place at the syndicate's headquarters in Tripoli. There are two competing lists in this electoral battle. The first list is named "Our Syndicate," headed by engineer Mursi Al-Masri, and includes members Michel Fghali (chair of the electrical branch), Mahmoud Al-Saj (chair of the mechanical branch), Raul Al-Zreibi, and Salim Nashaba as public members, engineer Philip Saad to manage the solidarity fund, and Majda Saidaoui, Noor Al-Ahdab, and Muhammad Al-Sharabi as members for fund oversight, along with Ridwan Al-Rassi for the disciplinary council. This list is supported by the Lebanese Forces, Future Movement, Marada Movement, and several parties and independents.
The second list is named "Syndicate for All," led by engineer Shoufi Fattf for the chairman position and includes Bassam Khayyat and Ely Awwad as members of the syndicate council, Milad Ghantos for the electrical branch, Bilal Taher for the mechanical branch, Mahmoud Fawwal for the solidarity fund, Said Khadr for the disciplinary council, and Tony Qleimi, Hussam Othman, Marcel Mansour, and Faisal Marhaba for fund oversight.
Lebanon's Engineers' Syndicate chairman, Arif Yasin, announced that the elections will take place today from 9 AM to 7:30 PM as scheduled. He noted that any news about the postponement of the elections is merely false news and incorrect rumors.
