Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced today, Tuesday, that five people, including three police officers, were injured in a shooting outside an Istanbul court. He added that the assailants were killed in an exchange of gunfire. Yerlikaya stated that "two assailants, a man and a woman, opened fire at a police checkpoint in front of the courthouse in the Çağlayan area around 08:46 GMT." He mentioned, "An attempt was made to carry out a terrorist attack today at the checkpoint in front of the Çağlayan courthouse... It was found that the traitors, known as E.Y. and B.B., who were neutralized, were members of the terrorist organization Revolutionary People's Liberation Front/Party." Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that the prosecution has opened an investigation into the attack.
The Revolutionary People's Liberation Front/Party (DHKP/C) has been designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States. The party was originally formed in 1978 under the name Devrimci Sol, or Dev Sol. It was a faction that split from the Turkish People's Liberation Front/Party. It was renamed DHKP-C in 1994 following internal fighting among factions. The party's ideology is Marxist-Leninist, and it aims to overthrow the Turkish state through violence and to eliminate the American and NATO presence in Turkey.
