UN: 35% of Buildings in Gaza Have Been Destroyed

Satellite images analyzed by the United Nations' satellite center have shown that "35 percent of buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged during the Israeli assault on the Palestinian territory." The center utilized high-resolution images captured by satellites, gathered on February 29, and compared them to images taken before and after the outbreak of the latest conflict. It concluded that 35 percent of the total buildings in Gaza, amounting to 88,868 buildings, have been either damaged or completely destroyed.

According to the report, "31,198 buildings were completely destroyed, 16,908 buildings suffered severe damage, and 40,762 buildings sustained moderate damage." The center noted an increase of about 20,000 buildings compared to the previous assessment conducted based on images taken in January, which indicated that 30 percent of all buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The report mentioned that the areas of Khan Younis and Gaza witnessed the largest increase in damages, with Khan Younis suffering damage to an additional 12,279 buildings and Gaza to 2,010 buildings; the most significant damage was in Khan Younis where an additional 6,663 buildings were destroyed. Health authorities in the territory governed by "Hamas" report that nearly 32,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the campaign launched by Israel following an attack by militants from the group on southern Israel on October 7.
