The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced today, Monday, that it "killed 16 members of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in airstrikes in northern Iraq, where they were hiding." It stated that it "neutralized PKK militants in the Hakurk, Metina, and Gara regions in northern Iraq." Turkey, the United States, and the European Union classify the PKK as a "terrorist organization." The group has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held talks last month with officials in Baghdad and Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, regarding the continued presence of PKK militants in northern Iraq.
