A Turkish woman died after falling from a cliff moments after her fiancé asked her, "Will you marry me?" Yeshim Demir and her fiancé, Nizameddin Gursu, were celebrating at sunset in a picturesque location on a famous cliff in Canakkale, northwestern Turkey, on July 6. After proposing to Yeshim, Nizameddin returned to his car to fetch food and drinks for the celebration when he heard his fiancée scream. He rushed back to the spot where he left her and found she had fallen from a height of over 100 feet.
The man later told local media: "We chose this place to have romantic memories regarding the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened in an instant. She lost her balance and fell to the ground."
Initially, 39-year-old Yeshim survived the fall, and her fiancé immediately called for help, but after 45 minutes of resuscitation efforts, paramedics pronounced her dead due to her injuries. The infamous cliff is a popular spot in the city, frequented by many to watch the sunset. Friends of the deceased stated that "there are no safety precautions at the edge of the cliff; a fence should be installed here to prevent similar accidents."
The cliff was closed after Yeshim's death, and authorities launched an investigation. The area was reopened "in a controlled manner" on July 15.
