The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" announced today, Friday, that it targeted the Karish gas platform a few days ago in the Mediterranean Sea. The statement read: "In continuation of our approach in resisting occupation, in support of our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women, and elders, our Mujahideen in Iraq targeted a vital objective in the Mediterranean Sea a few days ago with appropriate weapons, achieving a direct hit."
In parallel with this announcement, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari stated that "a drone attempted to enter Israeli airspace from the sea and the army engaged it."
The Karish oil and natural gas field, contested between Lebanon and Israel, is located 100 kilometers from the Israeli coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, and about 75 kilometers from the Haifa coastline. The field was discovered in July 2013, with confirmed gas reserves estimated at about 1.3 trillion cubic feet.
On September 16, 2022, the Israeli Ministry of Energy announced that it was preparing to conduct tests on the Karish gas field before connecting it to Israel’s gas network, coinciding with Energean Israel's confirmation that its main Karish project was set to start production within a few weeks.
