IMF Reminds Ukraine of the Need to Repay Its Debts

Ukraine will need to repay $2.9 billion in debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this year and an additional $11.5 billion over the next seven years, according to IMF data. Ukraine is the third largest debtor to the international institution, with a total debt of $11.1 billion. According to the fund's data from 2024 to 2031, Ukraine will need to pay $3.3 billion in interest (debt service).

Kyiv is required to repay $2.9 billion to the IMF in 2024, which represents 6.4% of Ukraine's budget revenues for this year. In 2025, the payments will rise to over $3 billion, and in 2026, payments will amount to $2.5 billion. Additionally, Ukraine must repay the remaining $6 billion of its debt to the IMF between 2027 and 2031. Ukraine's budget for 2024 includes expenditures of $86 billion and revenues of $45 billion, meaning that the Ukrainian budget deficit is $41 billion. Ukraine is receiving financial support from the West, and in the future, Kyiv will face challenges in attaining financial self-sufficiency.
