Sanaa El-Sayed, a member of Parliament from the Egyptian Democratic Party, submitted a parliamentary question regarding the reasons for the increase in electricity prices amid the severe rise in living conditions for average and low-income citizens. The MP pointed out that "the government has issued several ministerial decisions, including raising electricity prices, which is a major problem for a large sector of citizens. How can the citizens bear this increase when we have, according to indicators, a significant rise in poverty rates as per the World Bank report which set the rate at 32.5% in 2022, expected to rise by the end of 2023? With the increase in inflation rates, the number of people living below the poverty line has also increased." El-Sayed noted that "the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics has not released its recent report to obscure the indicators and figures." She added, "How can we increase the burdens on citizens and raise electricity prices amid the severe economic crisis they are experiencing?" She also expressed her opposition to the increase in electricity prices and the additional burdens on the Egyptian people.
