The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Ms. Joanna Frontska, welcomed the invitation made by the Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Judge Bassam Mawlawi, to conduct municipal elections from May 7 to May 28, 2023. In a statement, Frontska noted that "conducting municipal elections is important for adhering to constitutional deadlines and democratic practices in Lebanon, at a time when the country is facing a presidential vacuum and widespread institutional paralysis."
The Special Coordinator expressed hope that all stakeholders would take the necessary steps to ensure a smooth, inclusive, and transparent electoral process, enabling Lebanese citizens to exercise their political rights in a peaceful and organized environment. She observed that the upcoming elections provide an opportunity for citizens to voice their opinions, enhance their participation in local governance and development, and foster a sense of responsibility in local decision-making. She emphasized that the Lebanese people deserve effective, responsive, and accountable state institutions at all levels.
She also called for making the electoral process inclusive, particularly in terms of involving women and youth by providing them with genuine opportunities for active participation and effecting change. Frontska had previously met with Minister Mawlawi on March 30, reiterating the UN's readiness to support the Lebanese people in exercising their democratic rights. In light of the importance of respecting constitutional deadlines in Lebanon, she discussed with Minister Mawlawi how the upcoming municipal elections represent an opportunity for citizens to voice their opinions and enhance their participation in local governance. The UN is prepared to support the Lebanese people's efforts to exercise their democratic rights.
