Kurdistan Elections on the Verge of Postponement

A political source revealed today, Friday, the latest developments regarding the postponement of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections, following official correspondence from the region's presidency to the commission. The source said in a statement to "Baghdad Today" that "the commission will formally request to postpone the elections scheduled for June 10 due to a lack of technical capabilities and limited time."

He added that "the presidency of the region will announce the postponement of the elections," noting that "the decision will likely be issued on Sunday or Monday, and the new date will be October 10 of this year after extending the commission's mandate for an additional six months."

Earlier, the Federal Supreme Court issued a preliminary order to halt the Independent High Electoral Commission’s actions related to the Kurdistan elections and the approval of candidate names, based on a lawsuit filed by the region's Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. This was due to the commission's reliance on the number of eligible voters for seat distribution in each province rather than the population count, which is contrary to the constitution, according to the lawsuit's petition.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party had previously announced its boycott of the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections scheduled for June 10, in protest against the Federal Court's decisions related to the Kurdistan Election Law, including the cancellation of reserved seats and reducing the number of parliament seats to only 100.
