Geneva Discussions Open New Horizons for Resolving the Sudanese Crisis

Delegations representing the conflicting Sudanese parties concluded their negotiations in Geneva, which began on July 11, according to the UN's personal envoy in Sudan, Ramadan Lamamra. In a statement from his office, Lamamra noted that the negotiations, which were conducted separately with the two delegations, addressed measures to ensure the distribution of humanitarian aid to all Sudanese populations in need, as well as options to ensure the protection of civilians throughout Sudan. He pointed out that his team held about 20 sessions with the delegations, including technical and general meetings.

He stated that the delegations expressed their positions on key issues in light of their responsibilities and explored ways to address them to help alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Sudan, highlighting the parties' readiness to engage with him on these critical matters and the commitments made to respond to specific requests presented to them. Lamamra affirmed that the discussions in Geneva represent an encouraging initial step in a longer and more complex process. He noted that while unilateral commitments from both sides do not constitute agreements with the United Nations, he welcomed the commitments announced today by one of the parties to enhance humanitarian assistance and protect civilians.
