A 24-hour ordeal ended tragically for the young Jordanian, Hamid Ahmad Batah, who was trapped in a 27-meter deep and 100-centimeter wide pit in the Zarqa Governorate, northeast of the Jordanian capital, Amman. Rescue teams managed to retrieve his body after intense efforts but found that he had already passed away. Members of the international search and rescue team, in collaboration with Zarqa Civil Defense forces, worked tirelessly for 24 continuous hours following the report from the victim's family. The cause of death was identified as suffocation due to the collapse of the pit, alongside multiple fractures and bruises on his body.
Colonel Mohammed Khreisat, the director of Zarqa Civil Defense, stated that upon receiving the alert about the man in his thirties who fell into the pit, the rescue teams rushed to the scene and employed the latest suitable equipment for such incidents, including both small and heavy machinery. He added that due to the depth and narrowness of the pit, the international search and rescue team was called in to manage the incident and arrived promptly at the location.
One individual attempted to enter the pit using special oxygen cylinders, but unfortunately, the victim had already died. Consequently, heavy machinery was used to excavate alongside the body from a nearby location after securing the area to prevent debris and soil from falling on the deceased. After 24 hours, the search and rescue team successfully retrieved the body, which was then transferred to forensic medicine for further procedures.
