Streida Geagea to Berri: The Constitution Does Not Require Consensus, but Election of a President

Streida Geagea, a member of the "Strong Lebanon" bloc, confirmed that "Speaker Nabih Berri insists that he will not call for a presidential election session unless prior consensus is achieved. This position, in itself, constitutes a significant constitutional violation, as the Constitution does not stipulate consensus but rather election. Furthermore, it represents a new chapter in the attempt by a faction of the Lebanese to impose their will on others, sometimes through force and other times through the misuse of authority."

During her chairing of the board meeting of the "Cedar Mountain Foundation" in Maarab, she pointed out that "the more troubling aspect is President Berri claiming that his stance is in line with the Constitution, urging us to read the Constitution carefully. Therefore, I wish President Berri would provide us with the constitutional article that stipulates the need for consensus on a presidential name before holding an election session. To personally offer constitutional interpretations is also a blatant constitutional violation, given that the interpretation of the Constitution is the responsibility of the Parliament as a whole."

Geagea called on "President Berri to ensure the application of the Constitution as it is, and to directly convene an open session with consecutive rounds, according to the Constitution, to elect a president for the country, as there is no solution to the void crisis that Lebanon is thrown into due to the obstruction of the presidential elections except this solution. Betting on the despair of the sovereign team or the Lebanese to once again submit to the will of this faction is something that will never happen, no matter how long their obstruction of the presidential elections lasts."
