Reuters reported that Iranian sources stated Russian President Vladimir Putin requested Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to implement a "controlled response" to Israel. The sources mentioned that "Putin asked Khamenei to avoid civilian casualties in response to Israel." Tensions in the region escalated following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, just one day after an Israeli raid in Beirut that resulted in the death of Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr.
