Army Commander General Joseph Aoun held a meeting in Yarze with leadership officials and commanders of major units and independent battalions, attended by members of the military council. The discussion focused on the latest developments locally and regionally, as well as military institution matters, and he provided the necessary directives to face the challenges Lebanon is experiencing. General Aoun stated that achieving the maritime border delineation file would positively impact Lebanon both security-wise and economically, allowing for the investment of a significant part of its natural resources. He welcomed the political authority's consensus on accomplishing this file, emphasizing that the army fulfilled its required technical role in this regard.
He noted that the country's entry into a presidential vacancy phase amid political tensions might be accompanied by attempts to exploit the situation to undermine security. He pointed out that the army is completely unconcerned with these political disputes and does not align with any faction or party; its primary concern is to preserve stability and civil peace. He stated: "We will not allow the situation to be exploited and for our country to become an open arena for any security incidents or suspicious movements. Disrupting security is prohibited, as it is one of the fundamental principles of the army and will remain so."
General Aoun called upon relevant parties to act responsibly in order to preserve the public interest and urged Lebanese citizens to be aware, not to allow themselves to be exploited, and not to be swayed by dubious titles and slogans, as the country needs all its citizens. He added: "The security situation is under control, and protecting Lebanon is our responsibility. We have never accepted any harm to security and stability in the past, and we will not accept it today."
He addressed the military personnel by saying: "Thanks to you, the army remains cohesive, and Lebanon remains resilient. Many doubted the ability of the institution to get through this phase, leveling unfounded accusations and criticisms against it, betting on its downfall and the erosion of its popularity among the Lebanese by exploiting certain issues and events. However, you faced this injustice with your steadfastness, determination, and morale, proving through your performance and professionalism that you are capable of responsibility and worthy of local and international trust, as seen in the Fajr al-Jroud battle, which you fought, and in which you triumphed due to your sacrifices and the blood of martyrs and the wounded. From the events of October 17, 2019, where you proved that you saved Lebanon and protected it, to the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic crisis, the Beirut port explosion, the Tayouneh events, and successfully accompanying the parliamentary elections, as well as protecting the borders and confronting Israeli aggression and terrorism. You have shown that our army is professional, upholding values, respecting human rights, and protecting institutions. All of this makes me proud to be the commander of this army."
He also addressed skeptics, accusers, and instigators, saying: "The military institution is resilient and cohesive and will continue to carry out its mission to maintain Lebanon and protect its people, security, and stability." The Army Commander noted that assistance from friendly and brotherly countries serves as a supportive factor for the army and provides strong backing during this phase, with the latest being the generous Qatari grant from His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, pointing out that efforts are underway to secure additional assistance that has reached advanced stages.
