As the US dollar continues to soar, it annihilates what remains of the purchasing power of the Lebanese pound, surpassing the threshold of forty thousand, heralding disastrous living conditions as winter approaches. The political horizon appears closed concerning solutions, particularly regarding the presidential election, with no hope for a breakthrough before the end of President Michel Aoun's term. This leaves the doors open for the formation of a new government, whose fate will be determined this week before the Parliament transforms into an electoral body on the 21st of this month.
However, there seems to be difficulty in forming a new government, contrary to the atmosphere that prevailed in recent weeks, as noted by Lebanese Forces Deputy Asaad Dergham in a phone call with "Anbaa" electronic newspaper. According to him, the situation has drifted significantly, with each team raising its demands excessively, and no one is willing to concede to the other, at least at this time. He ruled out any change in positions over the next two days unless unexpected developments occur.
Dergham's remarks align with the stance highlighted by former Deputy Ali Darwish in an interview with "Anbaa" electronic newspaper, who also confirmed the existence of significant obstacles preventing the formation of a government, although he did not assert that matters have reached a point of no return. Darwish stated that "the coming days may bring unexpected surprises," wishing for a change in positions and a return to optimism. However, things appear almost closed, reminding that President Najib Mikati has made great efforts to form a government, which is evident to all. Unfortunately, following recent developments, forming one in the remaining days seems difficult unless a miracle occurs that turns things upside down. He added, "In the end, we must adhere to the constitution, which stipulates that a caretaker government assumes the powers of the presidency in case of presidential vacancy," noting his high hopes for the Parliament, which will move into a permanent state of invocation after the upcoming session on the 20th, hoping to elect a new president who will immediately call for the formation of a new government, which would resolve the issue.
