The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit today accusing the TikTok platform and its parent company, ByteDance, of failing to protect children's privacy on the social media application. The government stated that TikTok violated the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by allowing services targeting children to collect personal information from users under 13 years old without parental consent. The lawsuit is the latest American action aimed at TikTok and the Chinese company that owns the application due to concerns that the company is gathering vast amounts of data on Americans for the benefit of the Chinese government and influencing content in ways that could harm Americans. The lawsuit, joined by the Federal Trade Commission, aims to put an end to "massive illegal violations of children's privacy committed by TikTok."
