Bassil: I Am Watching Them and Smiling

The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, wrote on his account on the "X" platform: "I am watching them and smiling: some want to annoy me, and some want to please me. Some know that I am right, but I shouldn’t win! Some know that I shouldn’t lose, but it’s not worth winning that much! In any case, I have won, and at least I have won myself. Can you think about the country and its interests and forget about me? Can you govern your conscience instead of letting your hatred control you? Ministers, how can you accept a Prime Minister who surpasses the constitution and the law together, usurps a minister’s authority, and exercises it in front of you? Tomorrow, it will be your turn."

He added: "And, Mr. Prime Minister, how can you deal such a fatal blow to the Taif Agreement and then cry about it? Isn’t that its spirit! And, deputies, how can you undermine the principle of comprehensive legislation and legislate in favor of a person and then talk about the rule of law and institutions? And, Mr. Speaker, how can you accept such legislation when you know it belongs to the government and represents a significant blow to the separation of institutions? You all know that, in any case, there is no vacuum in the army, nor fear for its unity, and there will only be a Christian at its head. The problem is not here; the problem is out of spite internally and obedience externally. So, I forgive those who wish to annoy me and liberate those who want to please me. Do whatever you want, but act according to your conscience and the interest of your country! And no one should blackmail, tempt, or threaten me; I only act based on my conviction and conscience."

I am watching them and smiling: some want to annoy me, and some want to please me. Some know I am right, but I shouldn’t win! Some know I shouldn’t lose, but it’s not worth this much to win! In any case, I have won, and at least I have won myself; can you think about the country and its interests and forget about me?? Can you govern your conscience instead of letting your hatred control you?
