The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) requested clarification today, Thursday, from the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan regarding the exclusion of international organizations from educational projects, which could impact hundreds of thousands of students.
UNICEF expressed deep concern over reports that more than 500,000 children, including over 300,000 girls, could lose the opportunity for a quality education through community-based education within a month if international NGOs working in the education sector are not allowed to carry out their activities.
Two sources from relief agencies confirmed that humanitarian organizations have heard discussions in recent days about directives to regional authorities to stop international organizations' involvement in educational projects. However, the Taliban administration has not confirmed these orders to the relief agencies that requested clarification.
