Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced today, Monday, that the company will start "low-volume" production of human-like robots for internal use next year, following months of his announcement to launch them by the end of 2024. Musk mentioned in a post on the social media platform X that the electric vehicle manufacturer "hopes" to increase production of the robots for other companies by 2026. In April, Musk stated that Tesla's robot, named Optimus, would be capable of performing tasks in factories by the end of this year and could be ready for sale by the end of 2025. Japanese company Honda and Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor, have been developing human-like robots for several years. Companies are betting on robots to address a potential labor shortage and to perform repetitive tasks that may be dangerous or tedious, such as logistics, storage, and manufacturing services. Musk has a history of failing to meet bold promises made to Wall Street. Tesla's shares rose about one percent in pre-market trading on Monday.
