The video of the young Russian man being consumed by a shark in Hurghada, Egypt, continues to terrify swimming enthusiasts, especially with the circulating videos about the presence of sharks in the waters of Lebanon causing panic and confusion. Is there any real presence?
Mohammad Sarji, the head of professional divers in Lebanon, pointed out that many of the circulated videos are old, highlighting the existence of large fish in the sea. He predicted that if a shark approached Lebanese waters, it might be due to fishing practices that depend on dynamite, as the smell of blood attracts such fish.
The head of the marine rescue unit in the Lebanese Civil Defense, Samir Yzbek, clarified the facts regarding social media claims about the presence of sharks in Lebanese waters. In a statement published on the Lebanese Civil Defense's Twitter page, he mentioned that after conducting patrols, they encountered dolphins, and regarding the talk about the presence of sharks on the Lebanese shores, it became clear after studying the situation and consulting with scientists that the Lebanese coast is merely a transit zone for sharks as they move along the coast to a more distant location, hence, they do not approach the Lebanese shore closely.
Samir Yzbek confirmed that sharks might come closer to the beaches if there is waste floating in the water or dead fish, as they would approach to eat these, then continue their journey into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
Many experts in this field are questioning: "Is there a connection between pools and the fear of shark presence?" particularly since it is in the interest of pool owners to promote these videos.
