The "National News Agency" reported that the Jbail landfill closed its doors on Wednesday afternoon, until further notice, following promises made to the landfill contractor to ensure a portion of the owed financial amounts from the municipalities to continue operations and avoid closure, which were not fulfilled.
In detail, after a meeting held about two weeks ago at the headquarters of the Jbeil Municipal Union, attended by acting governor Nathalie Maari Khoury, the head of the union Fadi Murtinos, and the contractor, an agreement was reached to spare the region from an environmental disaster. It was decided that all municipalities, including those not part of the union that dump their waste in the landfill, would contribute payment. However, only three out of 40 municipalities responded, despite the agreement between the contractor and the municipalities union to secure an initial payment so that operations could continue, with the remaining amounts to be paid later.
