The United Arab Emirates ranked first in the region and seventh globally among the most ready markets for the era of electric vehicle mobility, according to the "Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index - GEMRIX 2023" released by the global management consulting firm Arthur D. Little. This reflects the UAE's commitment to enhancing sustainable mobility and its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The third edition of the "Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index" encompasses 35 markets across all continents, making it the most comprehensive in the industry to date; the report highlights the increasing trend of electric vehicle adoption globally since its last edition in 2022. The report noted that the UAE government has been proactive in promoting electric mobility, as evident from various initiatives, including the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030, which aims to provide nearly 42,000 electric vehicles on the streets of Dubai by 2030.
A key aspect of this endeavor is the Green Charger initiative for electric vehicles, which has significantly expanded the availability of charging stations in the country, currently totaling around 700 stations, with ongoing infrastructure expansion to accommodate the rising number of electric vehicles.
Joseph Salem, partner and responsible for the travel and mobility sector at Arthur D. Little Middle East, stated that the UAE has launched several initiatives to accelerate the transition to the era of electric mobility, and the ambitious vision for electric mobility in the country is supported by a range of incentives, including rapidly expanding charging infrastructure that facilitates the adoption of electric vehicles.
He added, "As the UAE seeks to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the government's focus on adopting electric mobility is crucial for reducing carbon emissions." The UAE and Hong Kong lead the list of emerging electric vehicle markets, having scored 57 points, highlighting their commitment to electric mobility despite operational and financial challenges. Both markets are witnessing significant progress in infrastructure development and customer acceptance of electric vehicles.
The UAE's commitment to electronic mobility and sustainable transport is yielding positive results, and with continued government support and collaboration with the private sector, the country is on track to become a leader in this field.
