Israeli media outlets revealed that Egypt has firmly rejected being part of the axis aimed at countering a potential Iranian attack against Israel. The Israeli newspaper "Maariv" reported that as part of its efforts to reduce tensions in the region, Egypt has communicated to Iran its commitment to closing its airspace to any military activities that could undermine regional stability.
The Hebrew newspaper added that in light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Egypt is adopting a cautious and balanced stance, clarifying its intentions to both Israel and Iran. Maariv explained that Cairo sent diplomatic messages to both sides, announcing its decision not to participate in the recent escalation that followed the assassination of the Hamas political bureau chief, Ismail Haniya.
Cairo emphasized that this step does not represent an antagonistic position toward Iran but is aimed at safeguarding Egyptian interests and sovereignty. At the same time, Egyptian authorities clarified to Tel Aviv, during a visit from an Israeli security delegation to Cairo, that Egypt would not be part of a military axis aimed at countering a potential attack against Israel.
Additionally, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atti made a phone call to his Iranian counterpart, Ali Baqeri Kani, as part of Egypt's mediation efforts between the two sides. This step reflects Cairo's ongoing efforts to contain the current escalation and reduce tensions in the region, as the entire region awaits the nature of the expected Iranian response.
