NATO announced on its website that representatives from eight military education institutions in Iraq visited the alliance's headquarters in Brussels on December 12 and 13. This visit was part of the annual review of military education programs aligned with NATO's Defense Education Enhancement Program (DEEP). Reports indicated that the Iraqi delegation was led by Major General Aqeel Mustafa Mahdi Al-Ramah, head of the Iraqi Defense University for Military Studies. NATO Assistant Secretary General for Operations Tom Goffus welcomed the Iraqi delegation, emphasizing the importance of a sustainable partnership between Iraq and NATO and encouraging continued cooperation to enhance Iraqi security forces. There was an exchange of views between the Iraqi delegation and NATO's international team and mission in Iraq, as well as an evaluation of the achievements related to military education objectives for the year 2022, a review of activities in this regard for 2023, and an agreement to develop objectives for 2024 and subsequent years. Major General Aqeel underscored the importance of conducting this evaluation regularly, demonstrating the Iraqi Defense University's readiness to achieve further improvement and development in collaboration with NATO's Defense Education Enhancement Program.
