German Police Shoot Attacker Wielding an Axe in Hamburg

The police in Germany reported on the social media platform X that officers shot an attacker who threatened them with an axe and a Molotov cocktail during a fan event for the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in the St. Pauli area of central Hamburg on Sunday. The post added that a large police operation is currently underway and that the attacker is receiving necessary medical care. The incident occurred while the Polish and Dutch national teams were preparing to face off at the Volksparkstadion at 3 PM local time (1 PM GMT). Fan activities are scheduled before the matches, and there was an event for Dutch fans at 12:30 PM (10:30 AM GMT), around the time of the incident. Germany is hosting the tournament, which began on Friday and will last for a month.
