Donald Trump criticized U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday for what he called a "spending spree causing inflation." Speaking to his supporters in Detroit, Trump stated that he would stop sending billions to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky if he wins the upcoming election in November. Trump described Zelensky as "perhaps the greatest salesman among politicians ever," adding, "Every time he (Zelensky) comes to our country, he comes back with $60 billion," according to the New York Times.
Trump's remarks came during his appearance at the controversial conservative group Turning Point Action rally. He took the opportunity of his first appearance at Church 180 in Detroit, the largest city in Michigan considered an electoral battleground, to indicate he might appoint Black Congressman Byron Donalds (45) as his vice president, a strategy aimed at swaying Black support away from Biden.
Trump acknowledged that this Florida congressman is among the names on his shortlist for the vice presidency, saying to the enthusiastic crowd of hundreds, "Do you want to be vice president? I think he would like that. I'll tell you one thing, he would be a good vice president too." Trump also held a roundtable discussion with Black civil, religious, and business leaders in Detroit at a time when his campaign announced the "Black Americans for Trump" coalition, indicating that "notable" gains for the Black community under Republican administration have declined during Biden's presidency.
